Choose the layout first
“Pocket door system” can describe both the panel arrangement and the hardware package. These are separate decisions. A project might use a single-pocket layout with an all-steel, heavy-duty, soft-close frame.

Core pocket door configurations
Most common
Single-pocket system
One slab slides into one side of the wall. It has the fewest moving parts and requires a pocket only on one side.
Wide openings
Double or biparting
Two slabs meet near the center and retreat into opposing wall pockets, creating a broad opening without a large swing area.
Maximum opening
Telescoping system
Two or more parallel panels move in sequence and stack in one pocket, useful where opposing pockets are impossible.
Alternative
Surface-mounted slider
The slab travels along the wall face. Often called a barn-door system, it is not a true pocket door.

Frame construction types
The frame forms the cavity and supports the track. Its stiffness affects wall flatness and rolling consistency.
Lightweight, economical, and familiar to residential crews. Thin members require careful plumbing and short drywall fasteners.
Metal uprights resist warping and can suit heavier slabs or high-use openings. Verify door-weight, thickness, and wall-size limits.

A purpose-built cage receives plaster or wall lining. A standard stud-wall kit is not interchangeable.
Do not improvise a telescoping, masonry, fire-rated, or extra-heavy system from standard residential parts. The track, pocket depth, hangers, guides, and frame work as one assembly.

Motion and performance packages
These options describe how a system behaves and can be paired with several layouts.
Standard manual
The user moves the slab from stop to stop. It is simple and economical.
Soft-close / soft-open
A damper catches the slab near the end of travel. Check width and weight limits.
Synchronized
Cables or belts coordinate paired doors. Center alignment and service access matter.
Self-closing
A spring, weight, or closer returns the door. Check force and accessibility requirements.
Heavy-duty
Stronger track and hangers serve solid-core, glass, oversized, or high-cycle doors.
Hidden guide
A low-profile guide controls sway with less visible floor hardware.
