Door weight and hardware capacity

Hardware capacity is a complete load path—not just a roller rating. The slab, attachments, hangers, track, frame, fasteners, header, guides, and motion controls must all suit the finished door and its daily use.

The lowest-rated component sets the limit

1Door attachment

Top plates, bolts, clamps, or inserts must suit the slab material without crushing or pulling out.

2Hangers and rollers

Wheel assemblies must match the track profile, adjustment range, and load.

3Track and stops

The rail resists deflection while stops absorb opening and closing impacts.

4Frame and fasteners

Track support, frame, anchors, and header connection transfer load into the building.

5Guides and controls

Guides, soft-close, synchronizers, and latches must suit thickness, size, and momentum.

Ratings are not interchangeable

A roller-pair rating does not make every other part suitable for that load. Confirm the complete system and all added accessories.

Calculate the completed door weight

Use the door manufacturer's documented weight when available. For custom work, assemble a weight schedule before selecting hardware.

Shipping weight differs

Packaging, pallets, crating, and loose parts can make freight data unlike the installed moving weight.

Construction changes weight—and behavior

Door type Capacity concern Attachment concern
Hollow-core Usually lighter, but large panels can flex. Needs solid blocking or an approved top attachment zone.
Solid-core or wood Greater mass increases roller, stop, and damper demands. Prevent splitting and follow fastener edge distances.
Glass or mirrored Dense and impact-sensitive; requires accurate weight and controlled travel. Use fittings designed for the exact panel.
Metal or specialty Weight may be concentrated in skins, frames, or reinforcement. Coordinate inserts or attachment points with the fabricator.
Applied finish Stone, acoustic layers, and moldings add weight after base specification. Projection must clear pocket, jambs, and guides.

Choose useful capacity margin

Avoid the published maximum

Leave room for uncertain finish weight, changes, adjustment, wear, and impacts.

Increase margin for heavy use

Shared baths, kitchens, offices, and hospitality spaces may cycle often.

Account for momentum

A slammed door creates forces beyond static weight. Soft-close must be correctly sized.

Plan replacement

Reserve capacity leaves options if a heavier slab is installed later.

Width, height, thickness, and weight work together

Wider slabs

Create more leverage at hangers and greater momentum at stops.

Taller slabs

Can flex or rack and magnify an out-of-level track or crooked pocket.

Thicker slabs

Must fit hangers, guides, cavity, jambs, pulls, and lock.

Uneven weight

Glass cutouts and applied finishes can shift the center of gravity.

Capacity is not fit

A high-capacity hanger can still be incompatible with the track, frame, door thickness, damper, or attachment method.

Soft-close, soft-open, and synchronization

Soft-close

Damper and trigger need an approved weight and minimum-width range. Wrong sizing can prevent control or engagement.

Soft-open

Reduces stop impact as the slab enters the pocket. Verify usable opening and pull access.

Synchronization

Cables or belts link double doors. Confirm each leaf, combined limits, travel, and adjustment.

Read both ratings

An accessory may accept less weight than the primary frame. Its approved range becomes the limit when installed.

Warning signs of a capacity or support problem

Track bows or height changes during travel

Inspect track support, header deflection, fastener spacing, and capacity before adjusting.

Rollers click, grind, bind, or flatten

Check overload, damage, debris, misalignment, and incompatible track components.

Door drifts open or closed

The track may be out of level; extra stop pressure is not a proper correction.

Top attachments loosen or crush the slab

The door may lack reinforcement, or the attachment may be wrong for its material.

Soft-close fails to catch or release

Verify weight range, door width, trigger location, adjustment, and travel.

Stop using a failing system

A sagging track, loose hanger, cracked attachment, or damaged glass panel can become a falling-door hazard.
