What Is a Pocket Door?

A pocket door is a sliding door that travels into a framed cavity inside the wall. Open, the door is almost completely hidden. Closed, it covers the doorway much like a hinged door—without needing floor space for a door swing.

How a Pocket Door Works

Most modern pocket doors are top-hung. Two hanger assemblies attach near the top of the door and roll inside a horizontal track. The track spans the doorway and continues into the wall pocket. A floor guide at the pocket entrance controls side-to-side movement without requiring a floor track across the passage.

Why Use a Pocket Door?

  • More usable space: no swing arc means a vanity, cabinet, appliance, or piece of furniture can sit closer to the doorway.
  • Better traffic flow: the open door does not project into a narrow hall or busy passage.
  • A clean open-room look: the slab disappears when adjoining rooms should feel connected.

Pocket doors are especially useful at bathrooms, closets, pantries, laundry rooms, home offices, ensuites, and transitions between living areas. They solve a layout problem best when the adjoining wall can remain free of obstructions.

Limitations to Plan Around

A pocket door is not automatically the best door for every opening. Its biggest advantage—the wall cavity—is also its main constraint.

  • The pocket wall must stay clear. Plumbing, ducts, wiring devices, blocking, and structural members may need to be relocated. Do not drive long screws or nails into the pocket after the wall is finished.
  • Sound and light control are different from a hinged door. Operating clearances around a sliding slab generally make it harder to achieve the same perimeter seal. Select purpose-made seals when acoustic or light control matters.
  • Service access deserves forethought. Use a system that permits hanger adjustment and door removal without opening the finished wall whenever possible.
  • The frame must be installed straight. A level track, plumb jambs, a flat door, and correct clearances matter more than force. Misalignment causes rubbing and poor latching.
  • Heavy doors need matching hardware. Never choose a kit from the door width alone. Include the finished slab, glass, applied panels, pulls, and other attached hardware when estimating weight.

Common Pocket Door Configurations

Single pocket door

One slab slides into one side of the wall. This is the simplest and most common arrangement for a bathroom, closet, pantry, office, or laundry room.

Double or converging pocket doors

Two slabs slide into opposite pockets and meet at the center. The opening can feel nearly unobstructed when both doors are open. Alignment, center stops, and matching door travel are important for a clean meeting line.

Standard and heavy-duty systems

The right class depends on actual door weight, height, frequency of use, and the desired operating features. Solid-core, oversized, glass, or heavily detailed doors often call for stronger track, hangers, and framing than a light hollow-core slab.

Soft-close, soft-open, and assisted release

Soft-close slows and draws the door toward the closed jamb. Soft-open controls the final portion of travel into the pocket. A push-release or assisted closer can make a fully open door easier to retrieve. These devices have their own door-weight ranges, clearance needs, and compatibility rules, so confirm the specifications before ordering.

  1. Door size and finished weight. Record the slab width, height, thickness, construction, and total weight.
  2. Single or double layout. For paired doors, size the system by each individual slab—not only by the combined opening.
  3. Wall construction. Identify the stud depth, finished wall thickness, load-bearing conditions, and required header design. A nominal 2 × 4 kit is not interchangeable with a nominal 2 × 6 kit.
  4. Available wall length. The wall beside the doorway must hold the door plus the frame components and required clearances. The complete rough opening is commonly a little more than twice the slab width, but the kit manufacturer's rough-opening chart controls.
  5. Conditions inside the wall. Locate plumbing, electrical, HVAC, blocking, and structural framing before demolition or layout.
  6. Hardware function. Choose passage, privacy, keyed, edge-pull, soft-close, soft-open, or assisted-release hardware before the frame is enclosed.
  7. Codes and accessibility. Confirm required clear opening, maneuvering clearance, opening force, projections, and operable-hardware rules with the applicable plans and local authority. A pocket door can be accessible, but the complete opening—not the slab label—determines compliance.

The Basic Installation Sequence

  1. Verify the opening, wall depth, utilities, header requirements, and finished floor elevation.
  2. Build or prepare a square, plumb rough opening to the frame manufacturer's dimensions.
  3. Install the header and track perfectly level, then secure the pocket frame and split studs without twist or bow.
  4. Hang the finished door, adjust height and reveal, and test its full travel before drywall.
  5. Install the guide and stops; confirm that the slab cannot strike hidden fasteners or framing.
  6. Apply wallboard with fasteners short enough for the frame. Protect the pocket from screws used later for trim, accessories, or wall-mounted items.
  7. Install removable jamb and trim components as directed, then fit the pull or lock and complete final adjustments.

For renovation work, inspect both sides of the proposed pocket wall. A switch, receptacle, plumbing fixture, cabinet, handrail, or wall-mounted television may indicate hidden conflicts even when the wall surface looks clear.

Does a pocket door need a special door?

Not always. Many suitable slab doors can become pocket doors, but they must fit the frame's width, height, thickness, and weight limits. The slab also needs enough solid material where hanger plates, pulls, or locks attach. Confirm compatibility before machining or finishing it.

Can a pocket door go in any wall?
