Match the kit to the framing—not just the finished wall.
Most residential pocket-door systems are made for either 2 × 4 or 2 × 6 wall construction. Measure the actual framing depth whenever possible. Drywall, plaster, tile, paneling, and other finishes add thickness, but they do not change the lumber size the frame kit must fit.
Step 1
Measure the wall thickness correctly
Begin at an unfinished edge, an electrical box opening, a plumbing access panel, or another location where the wall layers can be seen. If the wall is already finished, measure the full thickness at a doorway and subtract the finish layers only when their thickness is known.

Older lumber, plaster-and-lath walls, furring strips, tile backer, paneling, and multiple drywall layers can produce different dimensions. Verify the actual assembly before ordering.
Step 2
Identify the framing material and wall type
Wood-stud walls
Confirm the stud depth, spacing, header arrangement, and whether the wall is load-bearing. Standard wood framing is often the simplest condition, but the pocket area still requires the frame manufacturer’s split studs or steel uprights.
Metal-stud walls
Identify the stud gauge and track system. Do not assume a wood-wall kit can be fastened the same way. Follow the pocket-door and wall-system manufacturers’ requirements for anchoring and reinforcement.
Masonry or concrete
A door cannot slide into solid masonry without a new framed cavity or a surface-mounted sliding system. A framed false wall must provide the full pocket depth, track support, and required wall length.
Load-bearing walls
Creating the rough opening may require a structural header and temporary support. Have the design reviewed by a qualified building professional and obtain permits where required before removing framing.
Step 3
Check whether the pocket side can stay straight and rigid
The wall beside the opening becomes a hollow pocket. Its narrow frame members must remain plumb and in one plane so the door can pass between them without rubbing. Sight down the wall, check it with a long level, and look for bowed studs, twisted framing, thick patches, or uneven finishes.
- Heavy wall- mounted items: plan blocking or added studs for cabinets, shelving, handrails, televisions, or other loads.
- Tile and shower walls: provide enough rigidity for the selected backer and tile system; movement can contribute to cracked grout or tile.
- Fastener length: screws must not project into the pocket and scratch or stop the moving door.
- Baseboard and trim: use fasteners short enough to avoid the door path, especially along the pocket half of the wall.
Mark the pocket area before drywall, trim, cabinetry, or accessories are installed. One overlong screw can damage the door every time it moves.
Step 4
Locate everything hidden inside the wall
The pocket must remain open from the finished floor to the track and for the entire door travel. Inspect from both sides and, during a remodel, use available plans, a stud finder with utility detection, access openings, or selective demolition to confirm what is present.
Plumbing
Supply lines, drains, vents, valves, and cleanouts cannot remain in the moving- door cavity.
Electrical
Receptacles, switches, boxes, cables, and conduit may need relocation. Shallow boxes do not automatically make a location safe.
HVAC
Ducts, returns, refrigerant lines, and controls can consume the pocket space or prevent proper framing.
Structure
Posts, bracing, hold-downs, beams, and concentrated loads may make the proposed pocket location impractical.
If utilities must be moved, involve the appropriate licensed trade. Do not notch, drill, or remove structural members until the revised framing has been approved for the project.
Step 5
Match the frame kit to the complete wall assembly
Select the kit only after confirming wall construction, door size, door thickness, door weight, and available opening dimensions. A 2 × 4 kit and a 2 × 6 kit are not interchangeable simply because both fit the same door width.
A 2 × 4 frame kit is commonly appropriate when the actual framing is 3 1/2 inches deep and all product requirements are met.
A 2 × 6 system may suit 5 1/2-inch framing, thicker assemblies, or projects where the specified system benefits from greater depth.
Consider a frame kit with extra steel studs or design separate reinforcement that will not intrude into the pocket.

Step 6
Account for wall finishes before installation
Finish thickness affects jamb extensions, trim alignment, hardware clearances, and the final position of the door within the opening. Tell the installer about every planned layer before the frame is set.
- Drywall thickness on each side
- Plaster, furring strips, or existing wall layers
- Cement board, waterproofing, mortar, and tile
- Wood paneling, wainscot, acoustic panels, or applied trim
- Baseboard, casing, and any wall-mounted hardware
Repair or reframe the wall first. The track must be level, the jambs must be plumb, and the pocket must remain straight.

- Door width, height, thickness, and weight match the selected kit.
- Installation instructions and local code requirements have been reviewed.
