Installing Pulls, Locks, and Latches

How to select, lay out, cut, install, align, and test pocket-door operating hardware without damaging the door or creating interference inside the wall pocket.

Pocket-door pulls and locks must sit nearly flush with the door faces so the panel can travel into the pocket. The job is more precise than installing hardware on a hinged door: an oversized cutout cannot be hidden easily, a projecting screw can scrape the jamb or wall, and a latch that is only slightly out of alignment may not engage.

Use the template supplied with the exact hardware. Cutout size, backset, door-thickness range, screw locations, strike preparation, and handing vary by model. Dimensions in a general guide should never replace the manufacturer’s full-size template and instructions. If a paper template is printed from a PDF, print at 100% or “actual size,” then verify its scale with a ruler before marking the door.

1. Choose the Correct Type of Hardware

Flush pull

A recessed cup or plate used to slide the door from either face. It is a simple choice where no latch or lock is needed. Confirm that the recess is shallower than the available solid material and that the pull does not project beyond the door face.

Edge pull

A folding or pivoting finger pull installed in the leading edge. It retrieves a door that sits fully inside the pocket. An edge pull is often paired with face-mounted flush pulls and may be unnecessary when the selected lock already includes one.

Passage pull or latch

Provides a grip—and sometimes a latch—but no privacy locking function. It is suitable for closets, pantries, laundry rooms, and other openings that do not need to be locked.

Privacy lock

Locks from the room side and normally provides emergency release from the opposite side. It is commonly used for bathrooms and bedrooms. Confirm the required inside/outside orientation before cutting or assembling it.

Keyed lock

Offers keyed access but requires a product and jamb arrangement made specifically for a sliding door. Verify fire, egress, accessibility, and local code requirements before using one.

Double-door hardware

Two converging doors may use pulls only, or one active lock with compatible meeting-door hardware. A normal jamb strike cannot be used at the center unless the system provides a fixed receiver or astragal.

2. Complete These Checks Before Cutting

  1. Hang and adjust the door first. Set the panel level, establish the finished-floor clearance, position the bottom guide, and set the open and closed stops. Hardware alignment changes when the door height changes.
  2. Confirm door thickness. The lock body, trim screws, spindle, or connecting posts must match the actual finished thickness—not the nominal thickness listed on an order.
  3. Inspect the door construction. Verify that a hollow-core or engineered door has enough solid blocking at the lock stile. Do not cut through a narrow edge rail or depend on thin face skins to hold hardware.
  4. Check the pocket clearance. Include pulls, screw heads, decorative trim, warped door faces, guides, and any soft-close activator. Nothing may rub the split jambs or framing as the door moves.
  5. Identify the leading edge and room side. Mark “inside,” “outside,” “top,” and “leading edge” with painter’s tape. This prevents reversed privacy trim or a latch facing the wrong direction.
  6. Choose an operating height. Coordinate with nearby hinged-door hardware when appearance matters, but keep the full cutout within sound door material. Accessibility requirements may control the usable height.
  7. Account for finish work. If possible, make difficult mortises before final finishing, then seal all exposed wood in accordance with the door manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Tools and Supplies

Layout and protection

  • Manufacturer’s template and instructions
  • Tape measure, combination square, and sharp pencil
  • Awl or center punch
  • Low-tack painter’s tape
  • Scrap wood and clamps

Cutting and fitting

  • Drill/driver and correctly sized bits or hole saw
  • Sharp chisels and a light mallet
  • Router and template guide, when appropriate
  • Jigsaw or oscillating tool only where the template permits
  • Phillips and flat screwdrivers
  • Eye and hearing protection

Use hand screwdrivers for final tightening. A drill/driver can strip small screws, distort thin trim plates, or pull opposing plates out of alignment.

4. General Installation Procedure

  1. Read and inventory

    Lay out the inside trim, outside trim, lock body or latch, strike, edge pull, spindles, connecting screws, wood screws, and emergency-release tool. Compare every part with the instruction sheet before making a cut.

  2. Position the template

    Close the adjusted door against the finished jamb and mark the intended hardware centerline on the door and jamb. Remove or support the door as needed, fold or register the template exactly as directed, and tape it firmly to the correct edge and face.

  3. Mark both faces and the edge

    Use an awl to mark drill centers. Extend the centerline lightly across the leading edge so the face preparation and edge mortise remain aligned. Recheck top/bottom and inside/outside orientation before drilling.

  4. Prevent tear-out

    Apply painter’s tape over the cut lines and clamp a backer block where possible. For a through- bore, drill the pilot hole through, then cut from each face toward the center. Do not force a large hole saw completely through one side.

  5. Make the primary cutout

    For round hardware, bore only the diameter and backset shown on its template. For rectangular hardware, drill relief holes where indicated and remove the waste gradually. Keep the cut square to the door faces and slightly inside the layout line.

  6. Cut the edge mortise

    Score the outline with a sharp knife, remove thin layers with a chisel or controlled router setup, and test-fit frequently. The edge plate should sit flush—neither proud enough to strike the jamb nor deeply recessed enough to bend when tightened.

  7. Dry-fit the hardware

    Insert the lock body, pull, or edge pull without fully tightening it. Confirm that the face trims cover the cutout, moving parts operate freely, the edge pull folds flat, and all connecting screws start without force.

  8. Fasten without distortion

    Drill pilot holes sized for the supplied screws. Start all screws by hand, center the trim, and tighten gradually in an alternating pattern. Stop when the hardware is secure; overtightening can pinch the mechanism or crush a hollow door.

  9. Operate before preparing the strike

    Return the door to the track, move it fully open and closed, and test the pull, latch, thumbturn, and emergency release. Correct binding now. The lock must function smoothly before its location is transferred to the jamb.

5. Align the Latch and Strike

  1. Adjust the hanging door so it is level and parallel with the receiving jamb.
  2. Close the door gently and transfer the exact latch centerline to the jamb. A small amount of removable marking material on the latch may help identify the contact point.
  3. Center the strike on the latch—not on an assumed measurement from the floor.
  4. Trace the strike and cut its recess only to the depth specified. Keep the strike face flush with the jamb.
  5. Drill pilot holes before installing the strike screws. Confirm that screw length is safe for the jamb and adjacent pocket-door components.
  6. Test engagement repeatedly. The door should latch without lifting, pushing down, slamming, or pulling sideways.
Diagnose alignment before enlarging the strike opening. If the latch misses high or low, first recheck hanger adjustment, floor clearance, door level, guide position, and jamb plumb. Enlarging the strike may hide the symptom while leaving the door misaligned.

6. Special Installation Situations

Round hardware for a pre-bored door

Some pocket-door pulls are made for the common round preparation found on hinged doors. Verify both the existing bore and the product’s stated backset; “fits a standard bore” does not mean every pre- bored door is compatible. The HBP round pull/lock currently listed for a 2-1/8-inch bore specifies a 2-3/8- inch backset and doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. Confirm those specifications on the product page before ordering or cutting.

Rectangular pocket-door pulls and locks

These usually require a precisely sized notch or mortise in the leading edge. Keep the side walls straight and preserve enough wood around the fasteners. HBP’s rectangular heavy-duty pocket-door pull lists a 1-3/4 by 2-7/8-inch notch and compatibility with 1-3/8- and 1-3/4-inch doors; follow the installation sheet linked from that specific product rather than treating these dimensions as universal.

Separate flush pulls and edge pull

Lay out the face pulls first, but verify that their recesses will not intersect the edge-pull mortise or each other. A pair of opposing recesses can leave very little material between them. Use the actual depth of each product and the measured door thickness to calculate the remaining core before cutting.

Hollow-core doors

Locate the solid lock stile and verify its width. If the required preparation extends beyond solid blocking, select another hardware location or a door approved for the lock. Field-added blocking may affect the door warranty and should be completed only with a method approved by the door manufacturer.

Privacy locks

Place the thumbturn on the private-room side and the emergency release on the opposite side. Test the release using the supplied tool, and store the tool where it can be found quickly but not locked inside the room.

Double pocket doors

Adjust both panels so their leading edges are plumb, parallel, and at the same height before preparing any meeting-door receiver. Do not expect a latch to pull misaligned leaves together. Follow the converging-door hardware instructions for the active leaf, receiver, and any stabilizing parts.

7. Troubleshooting

The pull or lock rubs as the door enters the pocket

Stop using the door until the cause is corrected. Check for proud trim, loose screws, an over-thick decorative plate, bowed jambs, incorrect guide spacing, or a door that is not centered under the track. Do not grind the visible hardware until compatibility and alignment have been verified.

The latch will not enter the strike

Check door height, level, jamb plumb, guide position, and latch orientation. Loosen the strike and realign it only after confirming the door itself is correctly adjusted.

The latch enters but will not stay engaged

The strike may be too shallow, the latch may not extend fully, the door may bounce off the jamb stop, or the mechanism may be pinched by overtightened trim screws. Test the lock out of the strike to separate a hardware problem from an alignment problem.

The thumbturn is stiff

Loosen the connecting screws slightly and retest. Verify the spindle or tailpiece position, trim alignment, lock-body orientation, and correct door-thickness components. Never force the thumbturn.

The edge pull will not fold flat

Remove debris, confirm the mortise is deep and square enough, and make sure the mounting screws are not twisted or overtightened. The pull must sit fully within its edge plate before the door enters the pocket.

The door rattles when latched

First check the bottom guide, closed stop, hanger adjustment, and jamb clearances. If the strike has an adjustable tab or receiver, adjust it according to the manufacturer’s instructions so the latch is secure without forcing the door sideways.

8. Final Inspection Checklist

Test every function before installing final trim or declaring the job complete.
  • The door travels through its full range without the hardware rubbing.
  • Face pulls and edge plates are flush, centered, and secure.
  • The edge pull opens easily and folds completely flat.
  • The passage latch operates smoothly from both sides.
  • The privacy lock secures the door and releases from the room side.
  • The emergency release works from the outside.
  • The latch meets the strike without lifting, slamming, or side pressure.
  • Stops prevent the pull, lock, and door edge from striking the frame.
  • No screw or hardware edge projects into the door’s travel path.
  • Exposed cut wood is sealed as required by the door manufacturer.
