Get the finished door weight
Ask the door manufacturer for the actual shipping or finished slab weight. Include glass, mirrors, applied panels, metal skins, edge hardware, pulls, and locks. If the exact weight is unavailable, calculate an estimate from the material weight and add all hardware— then have the supplier confirm it.
Record the actual slab dimensions
Measure one door’s width, height, and thickness. For a double pocket opening, specify the size and weight of each slab, not only the combined opening. Also note whether the doors must meet flush at the center.
Confirm the wall and pocket
Identify 2×4 or 2×6 construction, the available wall length, finished floor height, planned drywall or tile, and anything that could enter the pocket. The wall must remain straight and rigid while providing clearance for the entire moving door.
Select compatible components

Heavier door hardware does not automatically make the pocket wall suitable for cabinets, shelving, tile, or shower-side construction. Extra steel studs can add wall rigidity and provide more fastening locations, especially where the pocket wall will carry finishes or wall-mounted items.
- Plan every screw length so no fastener can project into the moving-door cavity.
