What size pocket door will fit your framed opening? Enter the available width and height to estimate the panel dimensions for one sliding door or two equal doors that meet in the middle.

Measure the full rough opening: include the doorway and the pocket area inside the framing. Do not enter only the finished passage width. Results are planning estimates; the selected frame kit’s instructions determine the final fit.

Find your door size

Use inches and decimals. For example, enter 84.5 for 84 1/2 inches. Every measurement has its own field.

Double doors need a pocket on each side. The result is the size of each panel.
Measure between the outer framing members across the entire door-and-pocket space.
Use the floor reference specified in your kit instructions. Account for the finished flooring.
Extra width beyond twice the panel width for a single door, or four times one panel width for equal double doors.
Difference between rough opening height and door height, using the kit’s floor reference.

Starting values follow HBP’s measuring guide: 1 inch extra width for a single door, 0 inches for equal double doors, and 4.5 inches extra height. Changing the arrangement restores these starting allowances. Confirm or edit them for your kit.

Measure before you choose

  1. Identify the framed space. A pocket door needs room for both the passage and the concealed panel. Check the wall cavity for obstructions.
  2. Check several points. Record the smallest usable width and height, and check the framing for level, plumb, and square.
  3. Match the kit’s measuring method. Floor buildup and hardware clearances affect the height available for the panel.
  4. Verify the complete system. Confirm wall thickness, panel thickness, panel weight, and any soft-close size limits before ordering.

How the calculation works

The calculator works backward from the full rough opening using the allowances you enter.

Single panel width
(Opening width − total extra width) ÷ 2

Each equal double panel width
(Opening width − total extra width) ÷ 4

Panel height
Opening height − extra height

Single-door example: a 73-inch-wide opening with a 1-inch width allowance yields a 36-inch panel. An 84.5-inch-high opening with a 4.5-inch height allowance yields an 80-inch panel.

What does the result mean?

Panel size and clear passage are different. Jamb details, stops, and how far the door retracts affect the usable opening. This tool does not calculate clear passage or verify accessibility requirements.

Replacing an existing door? Measure the current panel’s width, height, and thickness when possible. Verify that the replacement works with the existing frame and hangers.

An unusual result? Recheck the opening and kit allowances. A calculated size may require a custom panel or an adjusted opening; do not assume a larger stock door will fit.
