The Track System Is the Working Core of a Pocket Door
The door slab may receive most of the attention, but the track system determines how easily the door moves, how well it stays aligned, and how reliably it performs after the wall is finished. A good system supports the complete door weight, keeps the hangers captured in the track, permits accurate adjustment, and controls the bottom of the door without requiring a floor track across the opening.
In the pocket door industry, the words track and rail are often used for the same overhead component. “Track” is the more common term for the enclosed channel through which the roller hangers travel. The complete operating system includes more than that channel.
Overhead Track
A rigid channel mounted to the header. Its profile must match the wheel shape and hanger assembly.
Roller Hangers
Wheel assemblies that carry the door. Adjustable hangers allow the installer to level the slab and set the finished clearance.
Guides and Stops
Guides limit side-to-side movement at the floor, while stops or bumpers establish safe travel at each end.
Most important selection rule: Treat the track, hangers, door plates, guides, stops, and soft-action devices as one matched system. A roller that physically enters a track is not automatically approved for that track or capable of carrying the intended load.
What Separates a Good Track from a Basic Track?
Rigid Construction
A straight, rigid track helps preserve a consistent wheel path. Extruded aluminum is commonly used for heavy-duty pocket door systems because it can provide a precise profile with good resistance to corrosion and distortion.
Captured or Box Profile
An enclosed box-style profile surrounds more of the wheel assembly. When correctly matched to its hangers, this design helps resist sideways movement and accidental roller disengagement.
Serviceable Layout
The system should allow adjustment and, where designed, removal of the door or hangers without disturbing the main wall structure. Track length and access-point placement affect serviceability.
Track strength alone does not determine capacity. The published rating applies only when the track, hangers, door plates, fasteners, header, and installation method are all appropriate for the load. An excellent track mounted to a weak or unlevel header will still perform poorly.
Understanding Roller Hangers
Each pocket door is normally suspended from two hanger assemblies. The hangers distribute the load across their wheels and transfer it through the track into the header. Ball bearings reduce rolling friction and are especially useful for solid-core, hardwood, tall, wide, or frequently operated doors.
- Wheel count: Three- and four-wheel hangers can spread the load and improve stability, but wheel count by itself is not a capacity rating.
- Bearings: Ball-bearing wheels generally require less effort to move than basic non-bearing rollers, particularly under heavier loads.
- Vertical adjustment: Threaded or wrench-operated adjustment lets the installer level the door, correct the reveal, and set floor clearance.
- Detachable connection: A releasable door plate can simplify slab removal for painting, replacement, or hardware service.
- System compatibility: Wheel diameter, tread shape, axle location, hanger width, and track profile must all agree.

Capacity note: Ratings shown are for one door using the specified complete system. A pair of doors in a double opening is evaluated one panel at a time. Never combine the two ratings to justify an overweight panel.
How to Choose the Correct Track System
- Calculate the finished weight of each door. Include the slab, glass, mirrors, applied panels, metal trim, pulls, locks, and any other attached material. Use the heaviest panel when selecting hardware for a double opening.
- Record the actual door dimensions. Width affects track length and soft-action compatibility. Height affects the rough opening and hanger adjustment. Thickness affects the door plates, guides, clearances, and pocket framing.
- Choose capacity with a practical margin. Do not select a system whose rating merely equals an estimated weight. Estimates can be wrong, and frequent use adds dynamic stress that a static weight number does not fully describe.
- Confirm the wall and header construction. The header must remain straight, level, and adequately supported. Verify whether the frame and hardware are intended for 2×4 or 2×6 construction.
- Decide on standard, soft-close, or soft-open operation. Make this decision before ordering because soft-action parts require a compatible track, hanger arrangement, door width, and travel distance.
- Confirm every part belongs to the same series. Do not mix Series 1 and Series 2 hangers or assume an older track accepts current replacement rollers.
Builder’s tip: If the door weight is uncertain, obtain the manufacturer’s slab weight or weigh the finished panel before closing the wall. Choosing hardware from door width alone can lead to undersized rollers and difficult future repairs.
Track Length, Door Travel, and Pocket Depth
A single pocket door needs enough overhead track for the panel to move from the closed opening into the wall pocket. The required track is commonly close to twice the nominal door width, but the exact manufactured length may be shorter or longer because of the jamb layout, bumper location, hanger access, and system design. Order by the manufacturer’s stated door size—not by applying a generic formula to the track.
For a double pocket door, two panels approach each other from opposite pockets. Each panel still needs its own properly supported track path and its own pair of hangers. A converging or joining component may be required to align the track sections at the center so both doors meet evenly.
- Confirm that the pocket is deep enough to receive the intended amount of door.
- Allow for the finished jamb, door stop, bumper, and any desired projection for an edge pull.
- Check that the track can be shortened before cutting it; never cut through a required access point or soft-action mounting area.
- Deburr an approved cut carefully so sharp edges or metal fragments cannot damage the rollers.
- Keep the center joint of a double-door system aligned, supported, and free of any step that the wheels could strike.
Soft Close and Soft Open: Similar Parts, Different Jobs
Soft Close
Slows the door as it approaches the closed jamb and draws it into its final position. This reduces slamming and makes the last part of closing more controlled.
Soft Open
Controls the door as it enters the pocket, reducing impact against the rear stop or framing. It is especially useful where the door is frequently pushed open with force.
Both Directions
Provides controlled travel at both ends, but the two mechanisms occupy track space. That is why minimum door-width and travel requirements must be checked.
Soft-action hardware is not a substitute for correct alignment. The track must be level, the guides must be properly placed, and the door must move freely before the soft mechanism is engaged. A dragging or misaligned door can prevent reliable capture and release.
Installation Details That Protect Performance
Even high-quality hardware cannot compensate for a twisted track, weak header, or misaligned guide. Test the entire system before drywall or wall panels close the pocket.
Before Hanging the Door
- Verify the rough opening and finished floor height.
- Confirm that the header is straight, level, and securely supported.
- Protect the track from drywall compound, paint, sawdust, and screws.
- Follow the system instructions for hanger insertion and track orientation.
After Hanging the Door
- Adjust both hangers so the slab is plumb and level.
- Set a consistent gap above the finished floor.
- Position guides so they control sway without pinching the door.
- Test full travel repeatedly before installing final trim.

Maintenance Without Creating New Problems
Many quality ball-bearing systems need little routine maintenance. Keep accessible track areas clean, check for unusual noise or resistance, and periodically confirm that the guides and stops remain secure. Do not add oil or grease unless the hardware manufacturer approves it; excess lubricant can collect dust and construction debris.
- Vacuum or wipe accessible debris without forcing material deeper into the pocket.
- Check that hanger adjustment and locking hardware remain secure.
- Inspect guides, stops, pulls, and locks for looseness before they affect alignment.
- Address new resistance promptly; continuing to force the door may damage rollers or track.

Can any pocket door roller be used in any track?
No. Track profiles and hanger dimensions vary. Use hangers specifically approved for the existing track or replace the complete track-and-hardware system.
Is a four-wheel hanger always better than a three-wheel hanger?

Can I cut a pocket door track to a shorter length?

Does a double pocket door need heavier track?

Can soft-close hardware be added later?
