Framing the Pocket Door Opening
A straight, square, correctly sized opening gives the track and pocket frame a reliable foundation. This guide explains how to lay out and frame that opening before the door system is enclosed.
Start with the exact frame kit—not a rule of thumb. Select the door and pocket- door system first, then frame to that manufacturer’s instructions. The dimensions below are specifically identified for current HBP frame kits; another system may require a different opening.
Know What You Are Framing
Rough opening
The framed space between the rough jamb studs and between the finished-floor reference and the underside of the building header.
The wall cavity that receives the open door. It must remain straight, clear, and free of utilities, debris, blocking, and protruding fasteners.
Clear opening
The usable passage after the frame, jambs, stops, door position, and trim are installed. It is smaller than the rough opening.
Do not confuse two different headers. The building header above the rough opening carries structural loads when required. The pocket-door kit header holds the track and door hardware inside that opening. Do not assume the kit header is structural unless its manufacturer expressly states that it is.
Before Cutting or Framing the Wall
- Confirm the door: exact width, height, thickness, construction, total finished weight, and whether it is straight and suitable for top-mounted hangers.
- Confirm the system: single or double door, 2 × 4 or 2 × 6 wall, weight capacity, guide type, and any Soft Close, Soft Open, lock, or push-release hardware.
- Confirm wall length: allow room for the doorway, the entire pocket, rough framing, casing, adjacent corners, and any required trim returns.
- Identify structure: determine whether the wall is load-bearing, part of a braced wall, or subject to special fire, sound, or seismic requirements.
- Locate conflicts: inspect both sides and the cavity for plumbing, wiring, ducts, switches, receptacles, cabinets, grab bars, tile backer, and other wall-mounted items.
- Establish finished-floor height: include underlayment, tile, wood flooring, carpet, transitions, or other build-up before setting track elevation.
Structural caution: altering a load-bearing or braced wall may require temporary support and an engineered or code-approved header. A qualified builder, engineer, or local building official should determine the required header size, supports, connections, and permits.
Sizing an HBP Single-Door Rough Opening
For the current HBP 2 × 4 and 2 × 6 frame-kit instructions, use the following rough-opening dimensions for a single pocket door:

For a 36-inch-wide door:

For an 80-inch-tall door:

*The listed subfloor marks reflect the reference dimensions in HBP’s current instructions. If the actual finished-floor build-up differs, establish the real finished-floor elevation and verify the required under-door clearance before mounting the kit header.
Double pocket doors: do not automatically double the single-door formula. Use the dimensions and converging-door details supplied with the exact double-door kit. Both track assemblies must finish at the same height and on the same centerline so the doors meet evenly.
Step-by-Step Framing Sequence
Choose the pocket side
Mark which side will store the open door. Confirm that the full pocket length is clear and that the planned handle, lock, trim, switches, and nearby cabinets will not conflict.
Lay out both wall faces
Transfer the wall line to the floor and ceiling. Snap parallel chalk lines for the wall thickness, and keep the new framing aligned with the existing wall rather than following an uneven finish surface.
Mark the rough opening
Measure from one consistent control point. Mark the rough jamb locations and header elevation, then check the arithmetic and the kit instructions before cutting any lumber.
Build the structural opening
Install king studs, jack studs, header, and cripple studs as required by the approved wall design. Keep the rough jamb faces plumb and in the same plane.
Square and brace
Check the opening at the top, center, and bottom. Compare diagonal measurements, correct twist, and brace the framing so it cannot move while the pocket frame is installed.
Verify the floor
Check level across the doorway and through the pocket. Mark the finished-floor line. Correct or account for slope before setting the kit header and floor brackets.
Dry-fit the kit
Place the kit header/track and pocket components without forcing them. Confirm the required height, pocket direction, stud positions, floor-bracket locations, and roller-access plan.
Recheck before fastening
Verify plumb, level, square, parallel spacing, and track straightness. A frame that looks acceptable from one side may still be twisted across the wall thickness.
How to Keep the Opening Straight and Square
Check in more than one place
- Measure width at the top, middle, and floor.
- Check each rough jamb for plumb on its face and edge.
- Check the underside of the building header for level.
- Compare corner-to-corner diagonals.
- Sight down the wall lines for bow and twist.
Protect the pocket geometry
- Do not force the kit into an undersized opening.
- Do not pull thin steel framing out of line with overtightened fasteners.
- Keep the track straight; a bowed or unlevel track causes rolling and binding problems.
- Brace the opening until adjoining framing and the pocket frame are secure.
- Keep the cavity clean throughout the project.
A useful field test: after the frame is installed, hang and adjust the actual door before drywall. The door should travel fully without drifting, scraping, rattling, or striking a fastener. Fix the cause while the frame is accessible.
Special Framing Situations
Load-bearing walls
Plan temporary support and a properly sized structural header before removing studs. The pocket-door kit does not replace required structural framing.
Double pocket doors
Build one level opening with enough support for both frames. Establish a centerline and verify equal track height, straightness, and door travel from both sides.
Tile, cabinets, and wall fixtures
Plan safe backing and fastener locations before assembly. Extra-stud frame kits can add stiffness and fastening points, but no screw may enter the moving-door space.
Plumbing, wiring, and ducts
Relocate conflicts or redesign the wall. A standard box, pipe, or duct inside the pocket can block or damage the door and may violate clearance requirements.
Uneven or sloped floors
Use the finished-floor elevation as the door-height control. Check the entire travel path so the door will clear the highest point without leaving an excessive gap elsewhere.
Heavy or oversized doors
Verify the complete finished door weight and all load ratings before framing. Heavier systems may have different header, track, clearance, and controlled-motion requirements.

Pre-Drywall Framing Inspection
- The rough opening matches the exact kit instructions.
- The structural header and supports meet the approved wall design.
- The rough jambs are plumb, the opening is square, and the kit header/track is level.
- The pocket framing is straight, parallel, securely attached, and free of twist.
- The finished-floor elevation and required bottom clearance have been confirmed.
- No pipe, wire, duct, box, blocking, debris, nail, or screw enters the door path.
- All future wall-mounted items have planned backing and safe fastener lengths.
- The door, hangers, guides, stops, and optional controlled-motion hardware operate smoothly through full travel.
- Serviceable trim or jamb pieces can be removed later if the system requires roller or door access.
Framing Questions
Can I frame the opening before the pocket-door kit arrives?
It is safer to wait until you have the exact kit and current instructions. Published door-size formulas are not universal, and double doors, heavy-duty systems, and controlled-motion hardware may require different clearances.
Does a 2 × 6 wall use the same rough-opening width as a 2 × 4 wall?
Current HBP frame-kit instructions give the same single-door rough-opening width and height formula for their 2 × 4 and 2 × 6 systems. The wall depth and kit components differ, so order the frame made for the actual wall construction.
Can a pocket door go in a load-bearing wall?
Often it can, but the structure must be evaluated and framed correctly. The building header, supports, connections, temporary shoring, and permit requirements should be determined by a qualified professional.
How exact does the framing need to be?
Very exact. The door moves inside a narrow finished cavity, so small errors in level, plumb, alignment, or fastener placement can cause drifting, uneven gaps, noise, or rubbing after the wall is closed.
