Hangers, Rollers, and Carriages

The door may be the part you see, but the hanger assembly determines how smoothly, quietly, and reliably a pocket door moves. This guide explains the parts, how to compare them, and what to check before the wall is closed.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Manufacturers do not always use the same names. In pocket-door work, hanger, roller, and carriage may describe the entire rolling assembly or different parts of it. Product specifications are more dependable than the name alone.

Roller or Wheel

The wheel is the part that contacts the rail inside the track. Its shape must match the track profile. Wheel material, bearing quality, diameter, and axle strength affect noise, friction, and durability.

Carriage or Hanger

The carriage holds one or more wheels and travels inside or along the track. A pocket door normally uses two carriage assemblies so the load is supported near both ends of the door.

Hanger Bolt and Door Plate

An adjustable bolt connects each carriage to a plate fastened to the top of the door. The adjustment raises, lowers, and levels the panel. A locking feature keeps the connection secure but allows future door removal.

How to Select the Correct Hardware

  • Calculate the complete door weight. Include glass, mirrors, applied panels, metal trim, pulls, and locks.
  • Leave a capacity margin. Choose a complete track-and-hanger system rated above the actual load.
  • Measure the door. Record its thickness, width, height, and top-edge construction.
  • Consider frequency of use. A bathroom or office door used many times each day benefits from durable ball-bearing hardware.
  • Match the track. Confirm the manufacturer, series, track profile, and carriage dimensions.
  • Check attachment strength. Door plates and screws must anchor into solid material, not a weak or hollow top edge.
  • Plan finished clearances. Allow for flooring, rugs, guides, trim, and the desired gap below the door.
  • Decide on controlled motion early. Soft-close and soft-open devices require compatible track space and door travel.
  • Plan future access. Removable trim or an accessible split jamb can make adjustment and replacement much easier.
  • Follow one system’s instructions. Do not mix parts unless compatibility is specifically confirmed.

Series 2: 3-Wheel

Series 1: 4-Wheel

HBP Series 1 ball-bearing hangers are rated for a door weighing up to 250 lb per pair. They fit the HBP Series 1 track only and use locking door plates that permit adjustment and later removal.

Premium Series: 400 lb

For exceptionally heavy or large doors, HBP Premium frame kits use four-wheel precision ball- bearing hangers with an I-beam track and a system capacity of up to 400 lb. Check each model’s door-weight requirements when controlled closing is included.

Installation and Adjustment Sequence

  1. Inspect before enclosing the wall. Confirm that the track is straight, firmly supported, clean, and correct for the carriages.
  2. Install the door plates accurately. Position both plates according to the hardware instructions and fasten them into sound material in the door’s top edge.
  3. Insert the carriages and required stops. Some parts must enter from the end of the track before the track or frame becomes inaccessible.
  4. Hang and secure the door. Engage both hanger bolts or pins fully and activate every locking tab, clip, or retaining nut.
  5. Set the height and level. Adjust both hangers in small increments. Maintain floor clearance and even gaps at the jamb.
  6. Position the bottom guide. The guide should control side-to-side movement without pinching, scratching, or noticeably resisting the door.
  7. Set stops and controlled-motion parts. Prevent the door, pull, or carriage from striking the end of the track. Test soft-close or soft-open engagement at normal operating speed.
  8. Cycle the door repeatedly. Test the entire travel before drywall, wall panels, trim, or permanent jamb pieces restrict access.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Maintenance That Protects the Hardware

  • Keep drywall dust, sawdust, paint, joint compound, and construction debris out of the track.
  • Listen for a new click, scrape, or rumble; a change in sound often appears before complete failure.
  • Inspect accessible door plates, locking tabs, adjustment nuts, guides, stops, and fasteners.
  • Clean accessible track surfaces with a dry cloth or vacuum attachment.
  • Do not automatically add oil or grease. Sealed ball bearings may need no lubrication, and sticky products can collect dust. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Correct binding promptly. Forcing a dragging door increases stress on the wheels, axles, plates, track, and framing.
